Capt. John Smith Sailed up the Chesepeake Bay in 1608, Tangier Island was a big Island than and Capt. Smith liked it so much that he named it after a place in Africa that was named Tangier. Tangier was later settled in 1687 by John Crockett, which bought the Island from the Indians for two fur coats.During the war of 1812 British forces housed 12.000 troops on the island while they planned an attack on Baltimore. Currently the island is 2.5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide and has a poplulation of about 650. Tangier Island is located on the lower Chesapeake Bay.
